The 2000 hectares Caucasus Wildlife Refuge has been established by the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC). The organization maintains the area as a protected buffer zone for the Khosrov Forest State Reserve.

The rare wildlife species occurring in the Caucasus Wildlife refuge include Armenian Mouflon, Caucasian brown bear, Bezoar goat, Grey wolf, Black vulture, Bearded vulture and Armenian viper. In early 2013 videos recorded by a camera trap also revealed that a Caucasian leopard has chosen the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge as its hunting grounds.

Proposed Itinerary

Day 1: Yerevan – Urtsadzor – Lanjanist – Eco-Center

From Yerevan we will have transfer by minibus to the Urtsadzor CWR Eco-Training Center. In CWR we will take our horses and start to ride to the Village Lanjanist. Here we will visit some caves where several bat species are living and might be able to observe rare bats which are listed in the Red Book of Armenia.

After visiting the caves we will ride to the small church in Lanjanist. After Lanjanist we will ride back to Eco-Center.

At lunchtime we will enjoy a rest and picnic in nature. In the early evening we will reach the Eco-Center where a dinner composed from delicious local products awaits us.

Overnight in Eco-Center.

Day 2: CWR - Gevorg Marzpetuni castle - Buffer Zone of Khosrov Forest State Reserve

In the morning after having breakfast in the Eco-Center and will start our horse riding to Gevorg Marzpetuni Castle. The castle is a small fortified structure with a church within its compound. It is set on a low hill, suggesting it may not have been built as a castle per se, but rather as a fortified monastery. The castle is named for Gevorg Marzpetuni, the 10th century Sparapet (commander in chief) of Armenian forces during the reign of AshotYerkat (the Iron) Bagratuni, who forged the resurgent Armenian kingdom by evicting Arab invaders and cementing the power of the Bagratuni dynasty.

We will continue our tour in Caucasus Wildlife Refuge (CWR). Here we will see some khachkars (cross stones) and an old cemetery. If we have luck we can also see some wild animals here. Our trail leads us through the buffer zone of Khosrov Forest State Reserve. The Khosrov Reserve is one of the oldest protected areas in the world, which has a history of 1700 years and is believed to be founded by the Armenian King Khosrov Kotak in 334-338.

This day we also will have nice picnic in nature.

Overnight in Eco-Center.

Next day check out at 11:00 and transfer to Yerevan.
